Three Ways to Protect Your Home From Fire Damage

A simple house fire can cause serious structural damage that prevents you from living there for a few weeks or more. When a fire breaks out in your kitchen, it can damage your appliances to the point where you can no longer eat at home. More significant damage may require that you and your family live in a hotel for a few weeks while professionals work on your home. Learning how to protect your home from fire damage will reduce the risk of a fire breaking out and make your home safer.

    Do Regular Inspections

Regular inspections of your home is the best way to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out and to reduce the damage that a fire might do. You can request a fire hydrant flow test to see how efficiently the water flows from the hydrant. The fire men and women who come to your home will use that hydrant to stop a fire from spreading. You’ll also want to inspect your home’s electrical system. Many residential fires occur because of an overloaded outlet or circuit breaker or because of faulty wiring inside the walls.

    Install Alarms

If your home does not have smoke detectors and fire alarms, you should install new ones in each room and in each hallway. A smoke detector looks like a small round box that you can install right on the ceiling or on a wall. As the smoke rises, the detector picks up on the smoke and sends out a loud alarm. Fire alarms monitor the temperature of your home and send out an alert when the temperature climbs high enough that it indicates the presence of a fire. Always make sure that the batteries inside those alarms work with tests that you do at least once a month.

    Invest in Fire Safes/Boxes

Many families have things that they want to protect and preserve for the future, including family photos, journals and documents. A fireproof box gives you a way to save those memories. These boxes can withstand high temperatures, and many will also withstand impacts caused by things following on top of the fox. You can invest in a fireproof safe that has more room for larger objects too. Taking these steps can help you reduce the risk of fire damage affecting your home and keep your family safe.
