Gingerbread 2.3 update for Optimus 2x goes live for open models in Europe

After a long long time of waiting, Optimus 2x users in Europe will finally be able to upgrade their Optimus 2x, the world’s first dual core mobile smartphone dubbed by others as the “world’s first smartest phone yet has the crappiest customer service”, to Android Gingerbread 2.3.

In a statement released by LG Mobile last Monday, October 31, 2011 on their official Facebook page, the LG Optimus 2X Gingerbread update is now available as of  November 1, 2011 just for the open models in Europe which means users in Europe should be able to upgrade their Optimus 2x to Gingerbread anytime starting November 1. Here’s their official statement:

LG would like to express its sincere thanks to all of the Optimus Series owners who have been waiting patiently for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade. We are excited by the high level of product interest that LG Optimus Series owners have shown, and we are taking all possible measures to offer a smooth OS upgrade in a timely manner.

The three premium smartphones of the Optimus Series will be upgraded first, as outlined below, followed by a global rollout thereafter.

  • LG Optimus 2X: Now available (as of 1st November, 2011) for open models in Europe
  • LG Optimus 3D: Week commencing November 21st for open models in Europe
  • LG Optimus Black: Week commencing November 28th for open models in Europe

The exact timing of the upgrades in each market may vary because of the different requirements in each country with respect to domestic operators and models. Please contact local service representatives to check the specific upgrade schedule in your market.

Again, LG greatly appreciates the support and feedback that customers have given during the upgrade delay, and we will do our utmost to continually provide better service in the future.

Thank you very much.

Some European users were able to upgrade their Optimus 2x to Gingerbread and reported that it made their devices much more buggy than ever. One disappointed modaco forumer says that “All they’ve done is take their existing source-code tree, including all bugs, merged it with GB and added localized keybards. They’ve not tried to fix a single bug, but introduced a few more instead.”.
