Living in our nation’s capital is appealing to many. You’re never left wanting for something to do, the city itself is a relatively safe one, and it has all the big city amenities a resident could want.
Some people, however, find the area to be too expensive or busy for their liking.
If you work in DC and are looking for an outside neighborhood to settle in, check out one of these many cities.
Arlington, VA
If you want the ideal commute to work look at Arlington real estate. Located five miles west of the nation’s capital, settling down here will make getting to and from work a breeze.
Arlington is home to noted national sites with the Arlington National Cemetery and Pentagon.
It ranks high as far as quality education goes and is known for a fantastic restaurant scene.
There are many neighborhoods within the urban area such as Bluemont and its young professional inhabitants, the urban village of Roslyn, and the hip Clarendon that is appealing for folks of all ages.
Bethesda, MD
Bethesda is about seven miles northwest of the capital, making for a quick metro ride into the city. It’s home to some of the wealthiest residents of the D.C. area.
The city is designated as an Arts & Entertainment District by the state thanks to organizations like professional theatre The Imagination Stage or eateries like the Bethesda Jazz and Supper Club.
Residents are highly educated; nearly 84 percent of them have a college degree.
Alexandria, VA
This affluent city is 20 miles south of the District of Columbia, rich with history in memorials and museums. Shades of the early colonial times it came from can be seen all about this walkable city.
Alexandria’s Old Town neighborhood is filled with local businesses and boutiques that sit amid stunning architecture, while Del Ray has a small-town feel that attracts young professionals.
Germantown, MD
The commute from here is a little longer, but other aspects of the city make up for that.
It’s a safe area that’s much more affordable compared to DC. The manmade down center is as stunning as the natural beauty throughout the area.
It’s a great place for families and has a diverse population.
Reston, VA
This is one of the smaller DC suburbs with a population of nearly 60,000.
The lauded school system makes this an ideal place for families, and the 20-mile distance from the city serves commuters well.
It’s an ideal place for people who love the outdoors and exercise with its 55 miles of walking trails and 250 acres of woods.
Takoma Park, MD
If you’re a family that’s active in politics this is a great spot to live. Anyone over 16 years old can vote in municipal elections and this left-leaning area has been dubbed “the capital of hippie-land” by many.
There’s also a lot of green space for nature lovers and a vibrant arts scene, as well as much to see if you’re into history.
Takoma Park has a strong sense of community, filled with friendly neighbors who don’t hesitate to say hello.
